No global map is “more accurate” than any other. The reason that the Mercator projection distorts size this way is because it’s impossible to perfectly represent a spherical surface on a flat plane without some kind of distortion. The MErcator projection preserves the shape of landmasses, but at the cost of size. Other projections like Galls-Peters massively distort landmass shape, but they preserve the relative size (roughly). The idea that Mercator is a deliberate act of ethnocentric imperialism is absolutely ridiculous. Mercator also preserves angles, so the angle between two points is the same as the angle you should go to get between those points
